FDA-approved uses
Ozempic is FDA-approved for adults with type 2 diabetes to improve blood sugar and to lower cardiovascular and kidney risks. It is not FDA-approved for weight loss. Wegovy is the semaglutide product approved for chronic weight management.
Boxed warning: risk of thyroid C-cell tumors
In rodent studies, semaglutide, tirzepatide and liraglutide caused thyroid C-cell tumors. It is unknown whether they cause these tumors, including medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC), in people. Do not use them if you or a family member has had MTC, or if you have Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN 2). Tell your clinician about a neck lump, trouble swallowing, hoarseness or shortness of breath.
Other serious risks
Pancreatitis, gallbladder problems, low blood sugar when combined with insulin or sulfonylureas, kidney injury from dehydration, serious allergic reactions, increased heart rate, mood changes or suicidal thoughts, and food entering the lungs during anesthesia or deep sedation. Semaglutide may worsen diabetic eye disease. Tirzepatide can make birth control pills less effective. Do not use during pregnancy.
