Wegovy is gaining widespread recognition and its approved uses and forms have recently expanded. It is available both as an injectable and as an oral pill. It is most often discussed as a weight loss treatment for adults with overweight or obesity who also have at least one weight-related health condition while it has several medical indications.
Wegovy can be costly if your insurance does not cover it. There are ways to reduce the cost with some options allowing it to be obtained for as little as $25.
What is Wegovy and How does it Work?
Wegovy and Wegovy HD both contain semaglutide which is a glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonist. They are administered as a once weekly injection under the skin. Wegovy oral is taken as a once daily pill. The specific uses and approved age groups can differ between the injectable and oral forms. The FDA has approved these medications for the following conditions.
- Reducing the risk of major cardiovascular events such as cardiovascular death, non-fatal heart attack or non-fatal stroke in adults with established heart disease who are overweight or have obesity (injectable and oral tablet).
- Reducing excess body weight and maintaining weight loss in individuals aged 12 and older with obesity (injectable only).
- Supporting long-term weight reduction in adults who are overweight and have at least one weight-related condition such as high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes or high cholesterol (injectable and oral tablet).
- Treating metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH) in adults with moderate to advanced liver fibrosis. But not cirrhosis (injectable only). Continued approval for this use may require additional clinical evidence.
Wegovy is intended to be used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity.
Why Does Wegovy Cost So Much?
Wegovy is more expensive for several reasons. Semaglutide is contained as the GLP-1 receptor agonist in Wegovy. The key differences lie in their approved uses, dosing, research, and access.
- Wegovy is specifically approved for weight management.
- This drug requires larger doses up to 2.4 mg per week compared to Ozempic doses which increases the amount of medication used per patient.
- Wegovy underwent its own extensive research program for weight management which adds to development costs and ultimately affects the price.
- Wegovy is limited to specialist weight management services according to NICE TA875.
Wegovy costs £200–300 per month in the private market compared to £150–250 for Ozempic. Using either medication outside its approved use counts as off-label prescribing.
Wegovy’s higher cost reflects its specialized use, larger dosing and the investment required to bring it to the weight management market.
What is the Wegovy Savings Card?
The pill or injectable form of Wegovy can cost as little as $25 per month for those with commercial insurance that covers the medication with the Wegovy Savings Card that is offered by Novo Nordisk which is the manufacturer of the drug. The program provides savings of up to $100 for a one month prescription, $200 for a two month prescription and $300 for a three month prescription.
How the Wegovy Savings Card is Different From Other Discounts?
Wegovy Savings Card is a manufacturer program offered by Novo Nordisk that works only with commercial insurance and an active Wegovy prescription. This is not a pharmacy discount and cannot be used by everyone.
- This is not a public coupon that can be used by anyone.
- This is not a cash discount for people without insurance.
- You cannot combine the savings card with other drug maker offers and government insurance plans.
- You must have an active Wegovy prescription.
Who is Eligible for the Wegovy Savings Card?
You can qualify for the Wegovy Savings Card if you are 18 or older, have a valid Wegovy prescription and have commercial insurance. The program is available throughout the United States and its territories although availability in Massachusetts may be limited by state law.
The savings card is not available to anyone without commercial drug insurance or to those enrolled in state, federal, or government-funded healthcare programs including Medicaid, Medicare, Medicare Part D, Medicare Advantage, Medigap, DoD, VA, TRICARE, CHAMPUS, or any other state healthcare program.
How Much Can You Save With the Wegovy Savings Card?
One of the easiest ways to save on Wegovy is through manufacturer savings programs. Novo Nordisk, which is the maker of Wegovy, offers a program called NovoCare to help reduce the cost of your medication.
You may be able to get Wegovy for as little as $25 per month for a 28-day supply of injections or a 30-day supply of pills if you have commercial insurance. You must have valid commercial insurance, need a prescription from a licensed healthcare provider and must not be enrolled in state or federal healthcare programs such as Medicare or Medicaid to qualify for a Wegovy savings card.
NovoCare still offers discounted pricing if you do not have insurance or your insurance does not cover Wegovy.
- Wegovy injections: Until March 31, 2026, the first two months are available for $199 per month at 0.25 mg or 0.5 mg doses, then $349 per month afterward.
- Wegovy pills: Until April 15, 2026, the 1.5 mg and 4 mg doses are $149 per month, then $199 per month for the 4 mg dose after that date.
Visit the Wegovy website or speak with your healthcare provider to take advantage of the savings.
What does “pay as little as” really mean?
You may see ads that say you can pay as little as a certain amount for Wegovy. It means that it is the lowest price that you might pay under the best-case setup. Your insurance must cover Wegovy and approve it under your plan. The savings should last only until the card limit is reached and your cost can change based on your plan and how your prescription is filled.
How to Use the Wegovy Savings Card?
You can apply for the Wegovy savings card online by visiting the NovoCare Wegovy Page for full details. You will be guided through a simple enrollment questionnaire on the NovoCare Wegovy page. You should be sure to review the terms and conditions for the Wegovy Standard Savings Offer before applying.
What if You Do Not Qualify for the Wegovy Savings Card?
Everyone does not qualify for the Wegovy Savings Card. This includes people with government insurance or those paying the full price on their own. You can take other options if you do not qualify for Wegovy Savings Card.
- You can check your insurance coverage as some commercial insurance plans need prior authorization before covering Wegovy. Your doctor or pharmacist can submit an appeal if your initial claim is denied. Some health plans have exceptions for weight management drugs.
- Prescription costs can vary between pharmacies. Shopping around may help you find a lower price for the same drug even without a savings card.
- You can ask for an alternative weight loss medication in the same drug group of Wegovy that may be covered by insurance plans.
- You may look into other GLP-1 drug options for weight loss such as Zepbound.

Wegovy may increase the chance of food or liquid entering the lungs during procedures during surgery or anesthesia. Inform all doctors you are taking Wegovy.
The most frequent side effects include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, or stomach pain, headache, fatigue, bloating, belching, gas, heartburn, low blood sugar in people with type 2 diabetes and runny nose or sore throat.
